Unusually for an email product, Sartre is based on an original WordPress theme, which means you can match your email campaigns to your existing site design and keep the same typography, spacing, and visual rhythm across every touchpoint. The toolkit is built on the open-source Acorn Email Framework and includes a boilerplate file that lets you drop in components without worrying about code conflicts. Every component in Sartre is fully responsive, including in Gmail's mobile apps and the ever-fussy Outlook family. Retina images are supported, and the smart CSS reset reduces the risk of your email being clipped when providers like Gmail apply automatic CSS inlining. The framework includes four-column golden ratio typography, mobile column widths and offsets, and custom mobile stacking so multi-column layouts reorder sensibly on small screens. There are also a few interactive elements not commonly found in email: a hamburger menu, a mobile accordion, and a star rating component. You can layer background gradients that survive most email clients, and because the code is stripped down to just the necessary markup, the resulting emails load fast and rarely get cut off. The full set of components has been tested with Email on Acid across 30-plus email clients, both desktop and mobile.
Sartre ships with multiple versions of the same template set. You get the raw HTML version, a MailChimp version, a Mailster version, a Campaign Monitor version, a StampReady version, and all 17 notification email templates for Shopify. Each version includes the 120-plus sections in separate files, plus buttons, dividers, spacers, and menus. There are also 10 pre-built marketing templates and 5 pre-built notification templates to use as starting points. Campaign Monitor, Mailster, and StampReady include an all-in-one file where all sections are combined, so you can build custom layouts just like the demos. The MailChimp version is different: because MailChimp's editor cannot handle all 120 modules in one template, it ships with the pre-built templates only. To create a fully custom MailChimp layout, you can build it in StampReady, export the file, and import it into MailChimp while keeping text editing ability. This makes the kit equally useful for store owners and email marketers.
